CHAGA NEEDS TO BE SAWED OFF AND THE BASE OF THE CHAGA PIECE MUST BE LEFT... IT NEEDS TO BE SAWED OFF WITH A LITTLE HAND SAW... NEVER BREAK A CHAGA CONK OFF A TREE... IT WILL HARM THE TREE... CHAGA GROWS ON A BIRCH WHERE A BRANCH HAS BROKEN OFF OR THE TREE WAS INJURED IN SOME FORM... CHAGA ACT AND GROWS LIKE A BAND-AID.. NEVER BREAK IT OFF.

Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge o chaga. What is the preferred pronunciation, chaga or shaga? Also, as one of your listeners asked, what is the growth rate of chaga?

Yellow birch, I'll measure it when I go back with my camera. I have a place where I've been foraging that is old growth and looks to have never been logged (no stumps)! It's really amazing. There are also maples 2.5 -3' and 30-40 feet before the first branches. I may have exaggerated a bit so I'll measure to be sure. Two people can't touch hands around it , I'm sure.

I hear shaga more in the north i believe the roots in russia? It's a slow growing fungi but I've heard the older/bigger the more potent. i don't personally believe it concentrates and gets stronger with age. I forage for chaga as well as other healing mushrooms and I'm keeping an eye on a few conks but I'll have to get back to you on life cycle. I saw a huge chaga on a yellow birch yesterday. The tree was 3.5 to 4 feet across and probably well over a hundred years old. I didn't harvest any of it , just too amazing. Can't wait to photograph it. I sell dry chaga on ebay if anyone needs some. Also have fresh reishi and gano. apaladum. ebay tl501960 . Mines way cheaper than pills and other websites 8-10 per lb on average!

I saw them whenever possible too. Less of a shock to the tree and to the chaga. It seems to recover faster when sawed off. If i can't saw i pound my big knife to shear off chunks. Try to never pry or whack it with a club or hachet.
