Brave Wilderness my son, who is autistic and probably coyotes biggest fan, is obsessed with natural science. He said he thinks this was a female. He said there was "scale spread" towards the middle and that could mean she was "gravid" (pregnant). I wanted to know if that could be correct. He would love a response from someone knowledgeable. :)

Yes I’ve seen one twice that size no exaggeration I was on a creek that is on the Kansas Oklahoma border and only a couple miles from Missouri state line as well. It was so big I still can’t believe how big. It had to be extremely old. The head was the most impressive and memorable thing I remember. Glad my wife and little brother were there to back up my story it was probably 6 foot long or longer and I’ve only seen them half that length and the girth was ridiculous.

Not really a good idea to force your camera in the snake's face knowing that it might strike (which it did) thus potential for harming the snake.

When I was much younger I used to love wading along a nearby
creek. One time, while doing so, I recognized the sound of a snake striking out
into the water; however, I could not locate the snake. A few days later I
returned to the area and watched closely. This time I witnessed the snake
strike at my arrival. After striking the snake fell into the water and quickly
retreated into some washed-out tree roots. Upon my third visit, I caught the
snake and kept it for a couple of months before releasing it into the wild. The
interesting thing about all of this is that the snake struck at me from a
distance of approximately 8 meters. Over the years I noticed that some cottonmouths
have a noticeably worse disposition than others.

Other than the head, I don't see the relation to the other cottonmouth you showed us in the comparison video. First off, it's huge size rules out the possibility of it being a juvenile, so how come it bears more distinctive brown and tan markings beyond the sides of its' belly? It's backside is certainly more colorful than the female from before. Secondly, didn't you say that the water snake had the checkered pattern on their belly scales? Well, looking at this cottonmouth, it has a very noticable pattern on its' belly, although it looked a lot blotchier than your usual checkered belly. So if this actually IS a cottonmouth, then why such a difference? I hope it's because it is a male.

I have just lost the respect I had for you guys. Up to this filming, I had not seen much, to say anything negative, about your animal interactions. But this, having this snake strike at a metal tool, multiple times? Come on guys! Now you have let yourself get excited to the point, that this snake is potentially breaking it's fangs. It has gotten past the dry, warning bites, and now dumping venom. Wasting it, on a grab device. Just let this guy go. You got your size comparison. Please stop putting them into a situation that will most likely injure them.

We have them at our lake, they like to get in boats and on boat docks here. They can also be super aggressive. They'll head right at people if they notice you. We had one come out from under the boat deck while we were on the lake once. Hit it with a paddle. Thing didn't even care. We jumped out onto the dock, and it went over the side of the boat. My uncle was trying to play steve irwin and grab a juvenile. It tagged his hand good. We had to take him to the hospital.

Once: in grande chenier, Louisiana (it's a very rural area of Cameron parish). Specifically in the mermentau river valley on the road at night, like this. I was the only one crazy enough to actually get out the car and check it out, which is how it was identified...we were fortunate to have the materials necessary to move it out the road so someone else wouldn't run over it. Also, when they're out on the roads they're vulnerable to predators - few that they are - so they're even more defensive than normal... Think about it, they're out in the open with no real camouflage to "run" to when they're threatened. So it's not even a "fight or flight" response to a threat....more like a "fight and run" response...the only reason I say that is because they very rarely attack people unless they feel if they're being poked with a stick and having a bunch of lights shown on them, lol 😉
