    My biggest problem with the dialogue in this game is that it does that thing where despite the game being set in a fantasy post-apocalypse the characters talk like millenials tweeting semi-unironically.

      That’s why I couldn’t get into the story of BotW. None of it made sense (when there even was story tbh) all of the townspeople can literally see the apocalypse and they talk to you like “yeah you can save the world, when you get around to it! Meanwhile could you help me catch my chickens??? 😮”

      @Rex Galilae Nailed it. Aloy is terrible and annoying. She is….like too much of a protagonist. Nothing in the world happens without her perfect influence. And most characters are just so terrible.

    In the options you can disable the "gathering" animations when you loot herbs and stuff, I highly recommend to do so.
    Maybe it was not available at the time of that review though.
    Unfortunately I didn't find a way to speed up the animations when you loot one of the billions chests that are populating the world. Seriously, what's up with the chests in the Forbidden West?

      I had to look it up, seems like they added it in April, so it wasn't available at launch. Good thing too. I wouldn't have played this game without it and I got it for "free" as a bundle with my ps5.

    I agree with everything, I also 100%'d the first game and played through most of the second and had a lot of fun with both games. Learning to pull apart a robot is such a unique combat experience where your first encounter is difficult as fuck but as you encounter it again you get more efficient and can dismantle them with ease, it's knowledge based gameplay more than skill based gameplay.
    Though I do think it could have been much better with less talking more fighting, as the story feels like it's going in a loop. There was a massive twist to separate it from the first game but the story arc was still the exact same, just fighting different robots. Or there needs to be much more personality added to side npcs as they have none for most of them, there are some nice moments but overall there's too much generic npcs and content.

      Until you get the ropecaster in the first game to just rip all the armor off of the robots. Then it just becomes a low IQ game of just mashing one button for every robot that might as well all be reskins of eachother with how similar they die to the ropecaster.
      Then again you could just not use it which makes the game so much better.

      Pretty much this, i felt the story on this one was just a mess overall, the plot goes from "exploring the so called _forbidden_ west" to tribes drama to aliens from space, it just tries to do so many things and resolve everything in the same plot. Not to mention that the dialogue at times was just...what was said in the video.
      The game was fun, i really enjoyed it, but it was the ubisoft formula all over again, it was the first game with a new'ish skin and bigger map (which i thought was unnecessary), devs need to learn from the Yakuza games that bigger maps don't mean better.

      my favorite part was how all the characters have nothing to say dispite talking for multiple hours and the story instead of telling not showing has everything through holograms so they can make u sit through a history class on a world that doesnt exist

    I played the first game and really the thing that kept me going was the desire to find out what the lore was. After learning all the secrets and backstory I kinda fell off and never ended up going to finish the final part of the main storyline.

      This! But unlike the OP, I almost dropped the game because the first part was sooo dull and generic. But as the lore got uncovered in couldn't wait to see where it was going. Shame the rest of it is boring same ol' open world garbage.

      I finished the story but never finished the DLC because I got so bored at the end. I switched to AC Odyssey and had a better time somehow even though I despise modern AC games.

    I liked the story of ZD, it was definitely compelling enough to get me through the whole game and I thought they really got across the feeling of pure despair amongst the Old Ones population as the apocalypse unfolded before them.
    They relied on cliché to get you thinking that there would be some weapon ex machina to fix everything and then got you interested by revealing characters' horrified reactions to Zero Dawn before finally telling you what it was, and I thought it was pretty original as it turned out. Then you had the extra chilling details like the ZD team knowingly using soldiers as nothing more than meat shields to buy a little more time, having to fake to the public that there is any chance of survival, the option for ZD candidates to euthanise themselves because the reality was so overbearing, the knowledge that even if the project succeeds your reward is still a lonely death. One of the better dystopian stories I've seen.
    But the gameplay was definitely not enough to make me interested in a sequel.

      @Vewtle You don't get my point the bow combat in forbidden west is great aloy is a swift hunter running and shooting but it's like she just turns that agility off when she goes in for melee with the animations having so much endlag melee combat is forbidden west is just a wast of time half the time you get punished for even using it because of how stupidly long a light attack takes to finish while in that time you could've shot 2 arrows dealing way more damage.

    my biggest complain with this game was the story. unlike the first one, this game had no mystery driving the plot. ofc aloy was saving the world in both of them, but in the first one, the enemy was mostly a mystery for a while. that created this cool atmosphere where you'd have a fun incentive to go forward. this one though, did not have that. it was just underwhelming

    I’m personally really enjoying HFW, but I think the review was fair. There is an insane amount of dialogue, but I’m one of the phychos that (usually) chooses to listen to everything, if the main topic is interesting enough.
    It did remind me of a lot of Ghost of Tsushima, and other modern open world games. I don’t personally think that’s the issue, open world is amazing, it just needs to be done in a different way every now and then.
    Hard agree on the looting tho. I’m already sick of picking up medical berries.

      This is where I am at, just finished the main game and it was really enjoyable and I liked finding more info about the world, I think it is fascinating lore.
      That all said, I can't do more than 2 of these games in a year. Horizon was one and Wlden Ring may be another but I just feel open worlded out with other games.

    To be fair, one of the biggest critics i remember Dunkey talking about in Zero Dawn was that the dialogue was awful because NPCs were acting like robots and had no pre-made animations so it was all stiff and generic. In this one however, i feel like they massively improved that aspect and NPCs actually move and gesture a lot when talking, and it's not just some random gestures, it's pretty cool. But overall i agree with the sentiment after playing Elden Ring, however i still top Horizon above games like Far Cry or AC where things are REALLY bloated too much.

    As a hardcore Playstation fan, I'm inclined to agree with your review. I'm playing through the first game and... it's ok. I decided I'm not going to platinum it and only focus on the main story.
    Also, BOTW absolutely trumps it in most regards. I'll probably get this sequel on a deep discount.

      That happens with a lot of Sony's first party games for me. Even ghost of Tsushima got boring after awhile and I was incredibly hyped for that one. They need a more interactive world/expansive gameplay mechanics to push the great stories forward. Pretty sure I stopped playing the 2018 god of war at the very end x_x beat 85% of it within a weekend and never went back.

    Years ago I thought I wanted super long drawn out games but I realized I really prefer a 5 to 10 hour tightly packed game that is fun to beat a few times a year. The resident evil 2 and 3 remakes are it. They reminded me of the great games back then that were so awesome to beat over and over. A long boring 30 hour game is not replayable at all. There’s no time and it’s again. Boring! Longer does not mean better.

      well, for me Elden Ring broke that replay value of a long-ass game. Took me 110 hours to beat the story with some side quests. Jumped back to ng+, beat it again and holy shit found soo many goddamn locations that I missed. Ng+2 was a decent playthrough. Was kinda bored by that point until I found a really really good weapon and ng+3 was again a really good playthrough.

      @Stiv64 lmao bold...they just compiled a bunch of things from their older games and spread it across an open world. They use the same sounds and animations as previous games. Elden Ring also is the most hand holdy souls games

      @Lorenzo I think part of the reason why new games are so risk adverse is because they are so huge and expensive. Every game needs the best graphics, the biggest world, and the longest playtime. The reality is these are extremely expensive. No company is going to dump millions into a risky endeavor. Unfortunately, these companies fail to realize that these things just don't matter.
      Players barely care about graphics. As long as it looks okay, its fine. Players also don't care about the size of the world. They don't care about playtime, either. Just look at Odyssey. Okay graphics, small "open" world, and short playtime. But its so condensed and so fun. Granted, that game wasn't risky for Nintendo, they are the 3D platform kings.

      @SecondTakeGER I thought Malenia's side quest was pretty good and that bloody finger one was really good IMO. Mohgwyn was phenomenal as well (again the bloody finger one) and the mimic tear one was good as well. I personally dig the side quests. Haven't completed them all and surely some could be not as good, but, most I think are pretty damn good.

      He probably often does not install the Day 1 patch as well. Which I’m glad, because it shows what all the developers could have easily taken the time to address had they play tested prior to release more and not worried about shipping it as soon as possible.

      I don't know man, if this game is anything like the first one it has a lot of minor visual bugs. I remember running into some sort of weird but ultimately harmless visual anomaly every 5-10 minutes in the first game.

    This hearkens back to what a former Playstation higher up said about how these games would be better as streamlined 12-15hr experiences. Rather than bloated checklist objectives and collectibles. To have meaningful exploration, collectibles that are just gameplay and cosmetic related. Dialogue in cutscenes. Tell the story not extend with filler dialogue

    Call me crazy, but I actually like how much dialogue and plot is in both Horizon games. Not all of it is great dialogue (and some of it can be a little cringy) but as a guy who prefers substantial single-player experiences over flashy multiplayer 10 times out of 10, I enjoyed taking my sweet time to get through Forbidden West and discover lore/backstory elements via dialogue. I'm sure others will disagree with that opinion.
    In other words:

      Fromsoftware are the masters of this industry.
      They litteraly surpassed other studios from the first try.

    The first thing I noticed when playing ghost of Tsushima was that you instantly picked up items without an animation and could even grab stuff riding by it on your horse. It’s a small change with a huge impact

    I thought I liked the first horizon. Then I picked it up again years later thinking “man, why didn’t I finish that game? That game was the shit.” and within ten minutes I remembered why I got 70 percent through and picked up something else.
    I’ve put 400 hours into elden ring (I like to max level my shit to use all the weapons) and even at ng+2 I would rather move on to ng+3 than buy forbidden west.

    I finished the first one and this feels like DLC. Like Witcher 3's Blood and Wine but not as good. Also, I like how at the beginning of the game she explains to her friend that there is no Goddess and that it is just a machine called A.I., completely destroying this guys entire belief system. His reaction? "Uh...ok." Superior writing there I tell ya. Great video Dunkey.

    One of the big let downs of Dying light 2 was the story feeling like your decisions had next to no impact on the way the game played out, me and my friends were playing through together and made different decisions on which faction to align with yet those differences between the choices were barely noticeable from one game to the next.
    Also, wow I thought I was the only one let down by days gone, I wanted that game to be so much better than it was...

    Horizon could have been much better. It has engaging combat, interesting lore, and the music in the first game was outstanding. But the biggest problem is that Aloy overshadows everyone and everything. Everybody else is just a prop, side kick or an antagonist. IMO, it was a big mistake to kill Rost off in the first game. He was the one character (aside from Sylens) who seemed to have his own motivations and vision. Hope future games in this series can correct these deeper flaws.

      Honestly I felt like Rost kind of had to die to force Aloy to move on from him, and he was planning to disappear anyway so Aloy would be forced to fall in with the tribe.

    Really like the world/setting of this game and the story works well in it, but the characters and dialouge have all been utter shit even since the first game. Sidequest are horrible as well and i was really hoping it would be better in HFW because in Frozen Wilds i thought they upped their game by a lot, so was really hoping they would build and improve on that.

    Zero Dawn was one of my favorite games of all time. Absolutely loved the story, music, and characters. In Forbidden West they didn't do enough with the story fast enough, your remarks about dialog were spot on, Sylens is (at least early game) a clown, and they made combat & skills progression much more complicated in a game which IMO doesn't benefit from it. I played it for a few days, and then moved on to Dark Souls III b/c I haven't played a soulsborne yet and it was seven fucking dollars at GameStop

      @a person Yeahhh Zero Dawn’s combat was a bit unbalanced. I remember how broken precision bows, frost and triple notched arrows were. Really fun, but kind of OP. I appreciate them trying to balance out the mechanics this time around.
      …That said there’s still broken mechanics lol. Get the ‘braced shot’ ability for precision bows asap! It’s in the Hunter skill tree and it’s extremely strong. Infiltrator valor + braced shot does absurd damage. It’s a great opener from stealth

      That’s because it’s a sequel game, where they know not everyone going into it has played the first. Forbidden west starts slow (especially if you’ve 100% the first game like you and I have) because they’re easing new players into the combat and world
      Things do shake up with the story once Aloy finds a Gaia kernel, but it does take a while to get going for sure
      I agree I preferred the more streamlined combat and skills progression of Zero Dawn. But I eventually came to enjoy the extra customisation in forbidden west, especially for outfits and weaves / coils

      I loved ZD but the combat in FW frustrated me so much. They nerfed all the straightforward stuff I relied on in the first game to try to force you to be more "creative" but the end result was just that it was complicated and annoying.
      Hope you liked DS3 though, that game is amazing.

      @Giorno GioStar what’s generic about it? I’d say the layout of the menu is pretty typical and the characters sometimes lack depth, but other than that I can’t see the case for how it’s more generic than other open world games.

      I had the same experience. Even after finishing Elden Ring I didn't want to go straight back to this game. I've only recently gotten back into it and am now close to beating it, but it took a while for me to quit comparing it to other games and just enjoy it for what it is

      @Jonathan Wilson I went from Elden Ring to FO76 and it feels fine. In a strange way, for how open Elden Ring is it still feels pretty linear. The world is intimidating at first, but unlike other open world games, it only feels big your first time through

      @Coffee Break Hero Late to the party but, I am here to confidently say that I love, I adore, and I thoroughly enjoy Horizon Forbidden West. I loved Zero Dawn, and I love Forbidden West. I had a blast playing them, they had everything I enjoyed. Fast paced battles where you can either try to strategize or go full no brain and just do whatever works. I loved the story, and while in Forbidden West... my mind stopped working because I had to do numerous double takes, I still enjoyed it.
      Of course games are all subjective! I love the franchise. and can't wait for the third to come out. :)

    While I love Horizon Zero Dawn, I can say with utmost certainty...
    I probably wouldn't have gotten it if I didn't want botw or actually had a switch.
    And it also took me 2 playthroughs to actually find out what the fuck was going on. In the 2nd playthrough I was going "oh so THAT'S how that happened... Wasn't paying attention the first time..."

    I remember back in 2017 I enjoyed HZD very much (except for the dull characters and dialogues) to the point of getting the platinum trophy.
    Turns out I played too many games like this in the past years, I dropped Forbidden West in the first few hours.
    And since they did nothing about the issues HZD had, why even bother?

    I play a lot of highly competitive multiplayer games. So to be able to have a game that I can sit back, relax and take my time to go through all the dialogue with, I actually really enjoy. Its a nice change of pace. Its just like TV shows in that some people prefer quick and easy 20 minute episodes, while others want hour and a half long episodes.

    I do love the lore of the game but I agree with your assessment. My graphical experience wasn't that bad even before updates but the long winded dialogs do have a tendency to break gaming flow. Love ya Dunk and keep up the work

    I bought the game but haven't played it yet. I really only got it because I did enjoy Zero Dawn but I did become exhausted of the Ubisoft type of design. I'm getting kind of tired of open world games now because most of them are just too similarly designed. I'll still have to play it just to experience it for myself.

    It's actually pretty hilarious to hear Monster Hunter being used as an example of quick gathering. Slow gathering was an older game system, but got replaced as people realized it's actually just rather tedious.

      @Tyler MacGregor For all you say, I very easily just ran in, swung, and back rolled away from basically every fight in World. The only thing that ever caught me was Odagaron. Obviously I didn't JUST back roll, but I remember it was to an extent that it became redundant, and I was almost never forced to think about which direction to roll, because the answer was almost universally just backwards. Any added lag just isn't relevant with how minute it is compared to the benefit of creating distance.
      No, the back roll alone didn't trivialize the game, but it's an example of ALL the added movement options. Moving while healing, sliding with Charge Blade, shoulder-bashing with Greatsword, etc, etc. It was honest-to-god, the least I've ever had to think in a MH game. I played entirely on auto-pilot until Iceborne.
      With Rise, I'm rarely ever at risk of fainting due to the low damage values, but I can at least remember that it was pretty hard to avoid getting hit, even with wirebugs.
      Lance's hops are partially good because of low end-lag, but most things couldn't hit it after one hop anyway. And being able to dodge backwards is absolutely monumental in games like these. Dark Souls has i-frames galore on its rolls, which encourages dodging in various directions, but in a game like MH, where you have hardly any i-frames, having a dodge that just always creates the most distance is game-changing.
      Obviously everyone would like the pre-g-rank expansion to have difficulty, but unfortunately that's just not the direction the series is going. It's not like either of the most recent games have had good challenges before g-rank, but World boded poorly for Iceborne's difficulty, because it just made things into stat-checks instead of skill checks. Rise is easy, but in a way that bodes well for the expansion at least.

      @Gatchu The lance’s backhop is so powerful because it has next to no end lag, and you can do it consecutively. For every other weapon, again, it actually has more end lag than a dodge in any other direction. Against monsters with quick followups, which a lot of them do with the more erratic patterns, that can screw you. Not to mention, once again, the innumerable moves that just flat out outrange or outlast it. It’s a convenient tool to have but it isn’t peerless, it certainly doesn’t trivialize the game to the extent that you’re suggesting.
      World was easy mainly because the equipment balanced was catered for tempered monsters. It only really became a pushover once you reached the endgame, once you had your hands on the high end gear. On your way up the ranks, it was enough to keep you on your toes, Tobi Kadachi, Anjanath, Odogaron, Bazelguese, Nergigante, they’re intimidating when you first meet them in a way that most of Rise’s roster wasn’t for me. Even recently, going back and facing some of the tempered monsters with HR gear, I was caught off guard. Yes, the factors making Rise easy are things that can and likely will be fixed come Sunbreak, but still, I don’t like this idea the community keeps rallying behind that we shouldn’t be expecting any sort of challenge before the G-rank expansion.

      @Tyler MacGregor My main point is that base World was easy because monsters just weren't built to handle how much more movement the player had.
      Base Rise is easier, but because monsters just have really low damage values, or are missing moves that will likely be added in Sunbreak. They're both easy, and Rise is easier, but in a way that's more easily fixed.

      @Tyler MacGregor There's so much text that's basically just repeating back what I said, without any counterargument.
      And being able to roll backwards is huge. It made committing to moves in World extremely mindless, because it was basically always optimal. And since when has the Lance's back-step not been the single best evasive move in the franchise? It's what the weapon was previously built on, and now every weapon has the capability of doing something similar.
      Yes, going from not being able to roll away to being able to roll away is a pretty significant addition. It's like Dark Souls going from the 4-directional roll to the 8-directional roll between games. And yes, monsters before Iceborne weren't really tuned up for it. Obviously it's not as big of a change as the wirebug, but monsters have clearly been given moves for catching wirebugs, even if they're not frequent enough to be a common threat right now.

      @Gatchu Yes, g-rank makes it more unforgiving, but still, the base game windows are never THIS generous.
      Fair enough, I was bunching them together for the sake of my point, but the point still stands that it’s harder to exploit than it was before. Obviously moves still have their tells, their patterns, their punishes, they can still set you up for bigger hits, or corner you in a bad spot, off the top of my head, you can tell which side Nergigante is going to shoot his spikes out by which arm he raises higher, so you can get something ready for him on the other side, Savage Devijho likes to combo his quick bite into a stomp, if you position yourself carefully when Barioth does his big flying slam, you can start charging something early and get a big headsnipe off. They’re still learnable, just now you can’t bait the easy to punish moves out as easily, the punish windows are a bit smaller, forcing you to engage with them a bit more, they cover their turnarounds so you can’t get that easy headsnipe off, at least not as safely. While I’m no game designer, I know that’s one of the basic rules, when you give the player more options, more quality of life, you have to compensate by making the game more unforgiving. Dark Souls was predictable because it had to be, your options were limited and the game had to be built around what you can do. The recent Elden Ring however, is far more open ended in terms of how you build and play, so it has to do the same thing, compensate by making it’s enemies more erratic, more aggressive, having them cover openings you were conditioned to in the past games, because you the player are now capable of doing more with less.
      I genuinely can’t tell if your rant about the backwards roll is sarcasm or not. The lance has had the back hop, something far safer, for as long as the series has been a thing. Most moves outrange it anyway, and the getup animation is a bit longer than dodging forwards or sideways. It doesn’t really get me out of trouble any more or less than a dodge in another direction. All it really does is make positioning a bit more convenient. It’s far less impactful than being able to instantly zip a dozen metres away with the wirebug, if that’s what you were trying to draw a parallel to.

    How are Dunkey's games always so broken? I played this at launch and never had any graphic issues in PS5. I do hope Horizon 3 mixes up the formula, but I can't hate this franchise

      @Karl Ten you can't climb in elden ring and Horizon Forbidden West doesn't have that any more which is unnecessary to climb when you can fly unlike elden ring which is boring to explore as it's just a walk fest to next boss what is the point of the story when NOBODY talks about it except the Fanboys

    I really enjoyed the first game because at least you discovered the world as Aloy did, giving that sense of discovery. I had to put the game down at launch when you start off with characters retelling you what happened in the last game like a lecture. The dialog is stilted and awkward as hell. I think I'm finally feeling the fatigue of repetitive open world games. This reminds me of the oversaturation of FPS games a decade ago. I don't think I'll power through this one
