  • Of the two space shows that came out this fall, many Star Trek fans are more excited about the Orville than the JJ Abrams/Breaking Bad style prequel Star Trek Discovery. I certainly feel the Orville takes me back to the days of Picard, Data and co on the bridge.

Serious... do you have some problems? No... i never thought about it, her name is michael, get over it... whats the thing with you that you have to think so much about it??? ...
I dont get the Discovery bashing, the "uuuh, they dont know about Star Trek"... how about thinking less backwards and welcome a new view? Im a long time Star Trek Fan (especially Voyager and TNG) and i just dont get these "Fans" clinging to the past, whining about how all was better back than...
Dont get me wrong, i love(!) The Orville, and jeah, it somehow feels like Star Trek back than, and that is really nice, love it! But that dosnt mean that i cant love the darker Star Trek Discovery... it is a good show, not only with stunning visuals, but also with a nice story, characters and so on... its a piece of evolved Star Trek, so how about embracing some new things instead of whining all the time...
And that subliminal racism (and sexism) is just pathethic by the way... fucking more than 10% of the worlds population are chinese, sorry to say, but the british empire is gone and the US isnt the only country in the world either.., this is the very essence of Star Trek, that its NOT the fucking US, but the world, humankind as a whole, and therefore Sun Tzu, chinese Names or whatelse are present just like english ones like the Enterprise or shakespeare... get over it...
    The redesigned Klingons sucks tho.

Such a whiney video. Klingons look actually a threat. Michael's name isn't distracting. Wow a female Captain and 1st officer is a reason to be down on the show? That is just pathetic sexist cry babying, grow up. If you a guy can't look up to a woman than sort yourself out! It's also quite like DS9 in that Discovery has depth and intrigue and just gets better and better. The Abrhams films are meh and Orville is fun but Discovery is compelling (if a bit time weird tech wise).

This is largely a not so good comparison. At least compare Oreville to the correct Star Trek. That being TNG, DS9 and Voyager. Discovery is a completely different structure. So try again with your review.

open heart surgery without anaesthetic is better than std. orville is ok with the few that has action, but it is mostly just about relationships of one sort of another and aliens bumming each other and just meh.... but a few good ones is a whole lot better than no good ones over a few seasons ( why that many? why for the perverted love of pervert god) it is zero to do with star trek. it is the dark twisted anti social mind of a pervert transposed onto a screen. first three episodes of that was enough for me to drop that bucket of bollocks for good.

it's interesting that both shows you make an attempt to make the officers more human less perfect and polite and following protocol than they did especially in a generation or deep space nine the only difference being that the Orville does heat with warmth and relativity where you can imagine yourself among them and it said multiple of Taki and thousands of years in the future we still be human to play stupid jokes with mr. Potato Head and have knick knacks on our desks and require alcohol far too much Discovery is they definitely went to try to make them seem more like actual actual people with flaws however instead of it being a wonderful funnyadventure of its pure omage to the original Star trek.Discovery any other hand definitely has roots in real human beings internet exchanges especially in times of stress or grief but instead of being wondering to be brings that feeling you get when you inadvertently eavesdrop on your parents fighting it's that uncomfortable

Your biases are showing in your rant. You argue a lot about norms, I guess it was nice when you're represented so regularly in the media that your perspective is the norm. But, it gets pretty boring to the point of being a trop. There is room in any franchise for different types of stories. To shit on other stories because it's not your entitled norm is dickish. Star Trek has always been preachy, inconsistent, but interesting stories is what keeps me interested. That has been inconsistent since the beginning, yet people idolize the past with rose colored glasses (Remember when Kirk wore Capitain green uniform). I find that this rise of "continuity" purists a symptom of the negativity bias and selective memory of the human brain and in association internet culture in general.

Roddenbery's idealism often made it difficult for writers and forced them to stage ridiculous reasons to create conflict. What has always been lauded in his works was the tackling of current social issues and the human condition in the guise of alien threats. I guess people still need to disassociate harmful human values to "aliens" to feel comfortable to discussing them. FYI Klingons always represented the "other" empireal/nationalistic threats to the audience (Soviets, Japan, etc...) - now when it becomes a mirror, the show is too political. Convenient, but a telling reaction.

My rant of your rant aside, I not saying that ST:D is perfect. I personally don't like the overuse of special effects and lens flaring that distracts from the story (Thanks JJ). The rampant use of Deus Ex Machina to solve the problems in the story is a product of lazy writing that I find it has in common with ST:Voyager. I do find that the characterization are as interesting as those I watched in ST: DS9 and that goes a long way for me in ignoring some of its flaws. But, that is my opinion and I don't falsely claim is some kind of norm as though blind to my own prejudice and preferences.

Captain SevenofNine, 1st Officer Data, Chief Engineer Wesley Crusher, The Doctor EMH, Science Officer T'Pal, Security Officer Alara Kitan, Helmsman Gordon Malloy, with Crewman number 6 Roc Ingersol and counselor Deanna Troi - The starship is up for debate - I always found the federation starships too flimselly built - too many weak spots. I'd have to design a brand new starship from scratch for this crew.

I have and found that while the Orville has a pc agenda to many of its story lines, it does t try to be the moral authority on the how the world should be of, where discovery tries to tell us how we should think. Discovery is just to darn political where Orville is just a comedy show that has some serious moments and a message that doesn’t say we are right and you’re wrong. Even though they’re trying to make changes to the message it won’t change many of us back

I saw nothing of the politics with the Klingons you mentioned. I have zero issues with ship names and races or names of the characters.
Uh, you seemed to have missed something big - *anyone can be anything in science fiction*.
A raccoon can handle a gun and fly a space ship, ffs.
People, LET YOURSELVES BE ENTERTAINED without trying to see so much into it that isn't there - unless some conspiracist tries to connect invisible dots ("I didn't see it till it was pointed out" - how about you didn't see it cause it wasn't there?).
I've watched Star Trek since the early 70s, and each incarnation along the way.
I have enjoyed each one while it aired, for itself and just the fact it's science fiction and space, and mind expansion.
Realize the obvious - science fiction means suspending belief to a certain extent, but still having some rules.
I see nothing political about Discovery, it is FICTION with some familiar names and references, but going off on its own, and that is okay.
Many people panned The Orville when it first aired less than two years ago.
I liked it from the start.
It is merely a DIFFERENT TYPE of entertainment, but still has space, tech, characters, and fiction.
That's all I ask for in my sci-fi entertainment.

hi, you as a fan of the tng aera you are talking from the deepest of my heart... the orville is not known to me, i am from germany. the show is unfortunately not on german television right now, but it looks amazing. But me too, i wish a new series in the tng aera, continuing with the Enterprise E or even another Ship. Maybe a Series within Picard´s Enterprise-D time ?! make a show around a known starship class. Take a nebula class or a cheyenne class ship, or another Ship like a Excelsior class and make a series around it. give it Mike Okudas computer design. with technics from today it could be possible to let them look more cooler. and the today possible special effects would be much cooler than before 20 years, but the look of the typical star fleet and their ships. the uniforms again, known enemies, maybe the romulans this time much more like the klingons or the dominion..
or make a video from the young O´Brian at the USS Rutledge under Cpt. Maxwell or some like this. Or make a TV Show about this huge mushroom spacedock and the life on it. Starship coming in and out, every crew has for one or two episodes a story. maybe 2 or 3 ships, that are asigned to this spacedock that has their own adventures like the Defiant and DS9.
I think many fans of the tng aera would much appreciate it. And room for some new things is there everytime. But i thing the biggest mistake in every new movie or show today is, that they take a already existing timeline and all the things that already happened in earlyer shows or movies, they don´t care about. They make their own thing, their own style and await from us to respect this. Maybe new fans who haven´t seen any star trek until now like it, but i am sure the most of "old" star trek fans do not like what Abrams did in the new movies and what they do now in Discovery. There is a new show upcoming with Picard, twenty years later, the first informations about were very promising, but if Picard is no longer a member of starfleet, what will we see with him ? Again all new things. A new starship, completely unknown, since he isn´t longer a starfleet officer it would probably not a starfleet ship, and if they meet a starfleet ship, this will be a completely new too, cause they always want to make their own thing and nothing should give clues or nothing should remember to old series and that ist in my opinion the biggest mistake. If the new crew around picard or a complete new crew on a until unknown ship, but of a known class is facing well known enemies or only have some new adventures, maybe at the beta quadrant or so, that would be a great thing.
sorry for bad english, i am from germany..
    mg mike

Great video, thanks also for talking about the people behind the shows and what that means for the star trek feel of a show.
I absolutely don't think that most sci-fi fans are male and basing that on the analytics for your own TRclips channel does not make any sense to me. Maybe your analytics are mostly male cause you say shit like "I can't get into a show where both the main characters are female" ???
And even if most sci-fi fans were male it seems to me like boys just need to get over their strong women allergy. I can get into a show with a male captain and first officer, get over yourself.

Writing a post-Voyager show is tricky because according to the finale, a Federation ship can upgrade to future tech in about three days with no shipyard support and become functionally invincible, able to one-shot 28-cubic-kilometer Borg Cubes. A week after the plans are sent around the fleet they will curbstomp any adversary short of the Continuum. So there you have it: one bad writing decision and you have to jump through hoops to explain why the Feds have any worries at all. (You can't invoke the Temporal Integrity Commission since they didn't do a thing when Janeway altered the destiny of trillions. They don't care.)

The Discovery holds no interest for me. The female characters are too much nonsense, poorly written, and all acting better than they are. The performances are weak, and unworthy of the name "Star Trek". The Orville, I have a great amount of interest in, but I have been too busy as of late to sit and watch it. That is a big one on my "to do" list. I should have watched it, rather than the first 2 episodes of STD.
Voyager had the right amount of good female characters, and good writing for them. Here's why:
-Captain Janeway: She commanded respect, made some very difficult decisions, and maintained her composure. A leader by example.
-Chief Engineer Torres: Being half-Klingon, and one of the fugitives in the first episode, she made the job of being Chief Engineer both believable, and importantly, within her grasp of intellect. She was still Klingon and acted that part, however, in a somewhat more subdued way most of the time, meaning she had internal conflict to maintain control of herself.
-Seven of Nine: Technologically advanced, but struggling with her former humanity, and assimilation into the crew of the Voyager, and away from the Borg, of which, she originally came from. One might have expected her to be the Mary Sue, due to her nano-technology implants, but she was far from that by her own standards, and about as believable in terms of characterization as Data was in ST:TNG.
-Kes: My personal favorite, as she has a very short life-span than we humans do, and it put a human face on the crew of the Voyager, as she struggles to uncover her purpose. Her growth was not instant, despite her ability to learn things, and she was one of the more gentle and demure members of the Voyager, and to be honest, she wasn't even really a member of Starfleet, so... there is that.
Discovery should have learned from that. Instead, we have a bunch of bitches fighting over who's right all the time, and throwing fits when they don't get their own god damn way.

I really enjoyed your comparison of these two shows. In any event, I suppose it all boils down to the producers' discretion, but I have to agree with your main supposition, that there is just too much angst and infighting amongst the crew of Discovery. While no ship has a perfect crew, alas, any crew so disposed to fighting with each other simply wouldn't last very long, in a television series, or in reality. Who would possibly want to work in such an atmosphere?
I think Discovery would do well to remember the central theme of the original, one of humanity and positivity, not simply preconceived angst in order to create scenic drama. No matter what difficulties the original sixties crew endured during their many adventures, they usually ended up laughing together, the true antidote to an otherwise unforgiving test of life and death. In my opinion, the entire reason why the original TV series has lasted so long is their reliance on strong interpersonal relationships and important moral issues, with the latest incarnation relying more on special effects, explosions, and violence. When this occurs, an inevitable lack of humanity is lost in the exchange. Welcome to show biz.
P.S. I also admit at harboring some discomfort with such a sudden and dramatic shift of command in the Star Trek universe toward TWO FEMALE PROTAGONISTS. Not that I disagree with female empowerment on any level, but this cast decision was just too transparently obvious for me to easily handle. Oh, well. I'm not the producer, so we'll just have to get used to the idea. Estrogen is thicker than water.

Okay star trek is way better than Orville. The comparison from original tng ds9 voyage to discovery is kinda stupid thinking. First Klingon from the. Original looked human except for a mustache and little chin hair. But in tng looked way different so why not hate tng its different from original so that series sucked to your way of thinking. I see as technology when gene Roddenberry created the Original was advanced as it is today. So the if gene had the tech for the Original Klingon and the bridge would look like discovery. If your real fans you would see it. Because you can only like the Original and hate all the other ones because they were different from the original. I believe Klingon from discovery can evolve to tng. Not original that look human to evolve to TNG Klingon. Stop calling yourself fans I stick by discovery even the so. So first season this season is badass Orville is boring I can't stay awake and its not really funny but it doesn't take much to amuse a megar mind maybe that's my problem I don't have a megar mind like all of you

This has been weighing heavily on me since I saw your video months ago. The Art Of War is renowned worldwide. It was even read in renaissance Europe, and supposedly Napoleon had his own copy.
In modern times it was required reading for KGB operatives, and is on the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program, and is heavily recommended to all Military Personnel in the USA. I won't deny that STD is probably trying to get that all important Chinese Market, but The Art Of War is something I would expect an alien military officer to have read at some point, and all starfleet officers to have in their personal bookshelf.

You know, you really haven't told me what makes the Orville so much like "Star Trek"; but I can tell you what makes it *not* like Trek. You talk about the "positive male role models" on the show, but when the captain gets kidnapped and the raw lieutenant is stuck in an impossible situation, what does the helmsman do? Yells at her in front of the crew until she breaks and does what he wants. He explicitly tells her "you suck" in front of a whole cafeteria's worth of her shipmates. He bullies her into disobeying direct orders. That's not "Star Trek". In fact, if that ever happened on any of the Trek series, everyone else in that cafeteria would have kicked the helmsman's ass. I don't remember what episode that was, but that's when I realized that Orville doesn't "get" Trek any more than Discovery does.

Getting sick and tired of the same few Holywood (((elites))) politicising and extreme left winging every single dam movie and series in existence and its reaching a sickening nauseous crescendo. We need to finish them once and for all. Ideas please?

I've watched all the Star Trek series since it first premiered on network TV... until half-way through the first season of Discovery. What a terrible mess this show is! Watch the Orville. Entertainment without the preachy bullshit.

A lifetime Star Trek fan, I bailed on Star Trek Discovery and made Orville my replacement until something better comes along for the Star Trek line.

also another problem with STD is in Trek you get to know the bridge crew well. in STD, you don't. the only people on the ship I remember are Lorka, Stamets, Saru, Burnham, and..... oh god no................. Tillie, easily the most stupid and annoying character on the whole show, at the few times I might be getting intrigued she walks on screen, starts talking and the whole time she's there I'm distracted with saying. "no, bad tillie, your annoying, now get off the screen." all the other bridge crew are just there and I know NOTHIING about them.

honestly I LOVE the JJ films. but their redesign is forgivable because it's set in an alternate timeline. so I don't mind the visual changes. but they said STD is set in the Prime Timeline and BEFORE TOS. this creates a problem because I like the designs in STD, the starships and costumes look cool, but everything just doesn't fit. Enterprise was ok for the NX-01 because the interior felt industrial and not luxurious like Starfleet ships normally are, and with a 100 year time gap the design change is forgivable, but STD is set 10 years before TOS. the ships need to have a TOS Aesthetic to them, the STD Klingon ships look really cool and unique but they feel out of place being KLINGON ships. CBS please stop with this corporate bullshit and let Paramount make Trek look like it used to.

I was following until the end when you tried to say that having a female captain and first officer was too much. There is no reason why this would not be feasible, especially in a future where equality is no longer even a question. And I don’t see how anyone could take issue with it unless they are just intimidated by the idea for whatever reason.

To be honest I only saw a few episodes of STD so my opinions might be a bit biased. But there is the problem. I have been a Star Trek fan in the early 70's and that I didn't make more of an effort to see more of the episodes says something. It doesn't feel "Trek" too dark, no ensemble cast to get to know and love . Orville is Trek in all the right places and new and fresh and clever enough to be around for some time to come.

I agree that Discovery doesn't feel like Star Trek, although i stilled enjoyed it as a space drama with great effects and makeup. It's doing a bit better in season two, i'm hoping as time goes on it finds more or it's Trek roots. In the meantime i'm quite pleased with the Orville capturing the feeling of Star Trek.
