Falcon Heavy & Starman

  • When Falcon Heavy lifted off, it became the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost.
Following liftoff, the two side boosters separated from the center core and returned to landing site for future reuse.
Falcon Heavy put a Tesla Roadster and its passenger, Starman, into orbit around the sun. At max velocity Starman and the Roadster will travel 11 km/s (7mi/s) and travel 400 million km (250 million mi) from Earth.

Pure Ignorance! The kind that keeps us Divided, that fuels Unreasonable Selfishness, Greed, Hate and the Dogmatic Ignorance is what's holding us back from solving our current problems and making gigantic leaps into Progress and Prosperity... I can only look forward to Elon's Neuralink to be able to Transcend into our inevitable next step in Evolution.

Aske Mervig Bahnson It’s a test flight. You’re not going to put a multi-million dollar satellite on top of a rocket on its first flight. Companies usually put concrete blocks to simulate the mass of a satellite. SpaceX decided to have some fun, and launch a car instead.

Wanted BFRs, high speed inter-city mass transit (hyperloop), electric vehicles/bikes and personal drones and it's renewable sourced fast charging network. With that future in mind, the need to own a car drops drastically. Hopefully Elon can see skinning a car is a waste of talents and the long game.

In March 2017, SpaceX's founder, Elon Musk, stated that because the launch of the new Falcon Heavy vehicle was risky it would carry the "silliest thing we can imagine".[6] In December 2017, Musk announced that the payload would be his personal Tesla Roadster.[7][8][9] Later that month, photos of the car were taken and publicly released prior to payload encapsulation.
One of the goals of SpaceX for the planned flight was to demonstrate their new rocket could carry a payload as far as the orbit of Mars. The company had offered NASA to carry a scientific payload; NASA did not accept.[10]
Following the successful launch, the Roadster became the first consumer vehicle sent into space.[11] Three bespoke manned vehicles have previously been sent into space: the lunar rovers of Apollo 15, 16, and 17 in the 1970s; all three were left on the Moon

Sometime in the very near future, it will be really cheap to orbit the earth (~ $50,000 and then less). It should be an absolute requirement of every head of state & every chief diplomat to take one of these rides. Every astronaut comes back from orbit incredibly moved by a) earth without boarders & political boundaries, b) the incredible beauty of the planet, and c) the tiny limits of the planet & its resources in the incredible black hostile universe.
Perhaps they might remember this experience when they later attempt to prioritize & solve the world’s serious problems.

Step it up spacex, this technology has existed for over 20 years. The McDonnell Douglas DC-X was started into testing in 1994 and had VTVL (vertical take off vertical landing)

    • How Does it Really Work
How Does it Really Work 6 gün önce

Lots of rockets landed vertically even in 1960s, but not a single one of them launched any satellites into orbit -- and that is what makes all the difference between SpaceX and the others. Otherwise, an amateur rocketry club can land a rocket vertically -- and many do.

+Elwyn Jones Falcon Heavy is essentially three modified Falcon 9's put together. SpaceX has been landing Falcon 9's successful since Falcon Heavy's test flight, so this failure obviously was as simple as just having too little ignition fluid. This shouldn't have any effect on BFR.

    • Elwyn Jones
      Elwyn Jones 9 gün önce

Does this represent a serious setback, or can this be easily fixed for further launches? Hope it does not delay BFR test.

    • John Smith
      John Smith 10 gün önce

Although the Falcon Heavy burns liquid oxygen and kerosene, an igniter fluid called triethylaluminium-triethylborane is used for initial ignition of the engines. It seems as though there was little or no triethylaluminium-triethylborane being fed to two of the three engines, this resulting in the ignition of only one engine during the landing burn. Subsequently, the centre core crashed.

It was a test flight. SpaceX is not going to put a billion dollar satellite on a rocket that isn't flight tested. It's normal for test flights to carry a weight of some description as a simulated payload, so why not use a car? But the choice of payload is not the most important aspect of this launch, it's the successful launch and landing of a heavy lift rocket. The ridiculous images of a car in space are simply the cherry on top.
