PAZ Mission

  • katma 22 Şub 2018
  • SpaceX is targeting a Falcon 9 launch of the PAZ satellite to low-Earth orbit on Thursday, February 22 from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The instantaneous launch opportunity is at 6:17 a.m. PST, or 14:17 UTC. The satellite will be deployed approximately eleven minutes after launch.
Falcon 9’s first stage for the PAZ mission previously supported the FORMOSAT-5 mission from SLC-4E in August 2017. SpaceX will not attempt to recover Falcon 9’s first stage after launch.

Anybody noticed (@ around 26 min)the gas jetting out from above the second stage engine nozzle? Is it fuel/oxygen? I noticed that in a few previous launches, and sometimes it seems like frozen and builds up white materials around the leaking area. Is it supposed to do that?

Ok. You are talking bout switching to rear (pointed to nozzle) camera ?
Hmm, honestly I don't know. Maybe customer didn't want to show details about they satellite ? It will be understandable in case of commercial/military satellites. But, since the PAZ is scientific instrument (space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/paz.htm) it does not make much sense.
Probably they just switch view without any reason.

Sometimes they perform tests on reentry - to check how much first stage can take before falling apart (this is probably the case in this launch).
Also missions objectives (cargo mass, destination orbit, etc) my require additional fuel = none is left for reentry burns.

If you are wondering why they didn't land the first stage it is because the payload was too heavy to have enough fuel left to attempt a landing so they used a non reusable launcher, they can recover the stage at night (I believe their first land landing was at night) but this time they chose not too for a separate reason

    • European Robin
      European Robin 4 saatler önce

    • Byron Theobald

There was no landing legs on the rocket if you look, they take them off for certain launches when they know there is no hope of recovering because it reduces weight, i.e. when there isn't enough fuel, as orbits such as geostationary require a higher velocity before separation, there isn't enough fuel left to prevent the rocket from making a nice hole in the ground/droneship.
This launch was also a polar orbit, and as such launched toward the south, because they aren't able to benefit from the earths rotation they again require more fuel. The first successful landing of the Falcon 9 was done on land at night, so lack of light isn't an issue.

That was the separation of the Spain government's PAZ aka SEOSAR satellite. It was one of 4 satellites inside the F9 payload fairing. The other 3 satellites include 2 Space X Microsats, designed for testing global high speed internet IAW the Starlink satellite constellation. The 4th is called Radio Occultation and heavy precipitation experiment which is somehow associated with the PAZ sat?
As for all of that other junk, inter-stage ring etc, I think that burns up on reentry.
