I just realized that earlier in the movie/series Hagrid does actually tell the movie audience that he's "not supposed to use magic". Wouldn't that explain him dragging the tree? He'd use it away from the school on the fat one sure, but he probably wouldn't want to do it in broad daylight at the establishment he works at :)

I'm going to defend Right Guy again. I know I'm only talking to myself, because this is five years old, but deal with it.
He is incompetently making a perfectly valid point, the same one as that other time: That a movie has some liability, like "we know the legislation passed, so it can't build tension" or "there's a book that provides a world too complex for a film to convey", good film makers simply do something else to compensate or solve it. Filmmakers should be two words. Not even a hyphen.
So a good adaptation manages to include a lot of nods to the book, but still gives the newbies all the info they need to be just as caught up in it. Which Harry Potter failed to do, so much that I (having read all the books) lost interest in the films halfway through the series. Dune was a worst-case example of blowing both entirely, though if he'd taken the original footage and edited it into three films (a-la Lord of the Rings), it would have probably worked. But film bureaucrats would never have approved that before the late nineties.
Oh, and the spells and wands are a crutch. You don't need either of them to work magic at all, in that world. See Potter doing magic before he even knows it exists.
Conspiracy theory: The Ministry of Magic focuses everyone specifically on wands and spells, indoctrinating them to depend on those crutches, in order to make magic-using people easier to control.

In all seriousness, while you should read the book before the movie, the movies should pretend (as far as when where why and how) the books don't exist.
Movie Big Wigs, specifically Directors, Producers and Script Writers, should convince themselves that the only people that have read the books, are those making the movies.

Honestly, I see movies as visual representation of the books and believe that there is no need for it to explain anything. Books are for story and facts, movies are for action and little bonuses (additions and fillers). I'm heavily on the "read the damn book" side, but I won't hate on someone for disagreeing, I will simply explain my own opinion.

This is the same as the Marvel movies and Agents of Shield. In order to understand why The Avengers are going to that Hydra base at the start of Age of Ultron or how they even found it you apparently have to watch the show. Which is fucking bullshit. I shouldn't have to watch some garbage show that should exist parallel to but individually of the film's to understand major plot points. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and I assume the upcoming Luke Cage show all exist in the MCU yet I wouldn't have to watch their shows to understand what's going on in the movies. It's complete horseshit. In other words, I love Coulson, but fuck Agents of Shield.

I wouldn't say you necessarily HAVE to read the book for every book-to-film adaptation, but what I would say is that it is often a good idea to know what you're getting into/to know a little bit about the story before watching a movie and assuming it's going to be able to explain everything necessary sufficiently. A two hour summod movie is not going to be able to adequately tell every necessary part of a good story all on its own, and there are going to be bits cut out, even necessary bits. And "well, we'll figure it out if we're smart enough" is not always a good way to go/think. Just my take on it. Don't HAVE to read the books, but I wouldn't say "the books do not f***ing matter!" as "Everything Wrong With CinemaSins so....eloquently...puts it, either.

  • Snakie

I totally agree that the books don't matter. The movies should be evaluated on their own merit independently of the books. Nothing said in the books that explains something in the movie needs to be considered unless that explanation is put into the movie too.
They are 2 separate entities that should be looked at based on how well they stand on their own without outside input.

    • Aliyah J.
      Aliyah J. 2 yıl önce +1

Snakie I think the books DO matter. If you're going to make a movie out of a book and the movie is nothing like the book that's kind of disrespectful to the author. As a writer I'd be pretty irritated if someone decided to just use my book name and characters and turn into something completely different then what my book was intended to be.

I'm a big reader and one of those who loves to see movies made based on books, but I have to agree with you that if the movie does not explain why all these are happening, then the movie is not doing its job. George Lucas had a novelization made for each of his Star Wars prequels and then deliberately left sh*t out so that you had to buy the books to get the whole story. Everyone told me if I would buy the books, the stuff with the Jedi would make more sense to me. And I said that if I HAD to buy those books to make this story make any kind of sense, then George had not done his job when he wrote and directed those horrible prequels. So, now I have to say the same thing about other book adaptations. Memoirs of a Geisha is a great example of a book adapted into a movie that still tells you everything you need to know for the story to make sense.
So why I sometimes get frustrated with you that you haven't read the books to some of these films and therefore sin things that are obvious to the readers, I try to remember that if it isn't making sense to you, then the movie is flawed.

some book movies I read because I enjoy reading the book first, but most of the movies that are book related I like watching before I read the book. It gives you a different perspective as just as fan and you can make your decision based on just the movie itself, reading the book after just helps you understand some of the hidden references in it that would either make the movie better or worse depending on how you use them. But most of the time I watch the movie first, it helps give me an idea of how to shape the characters and pronounce their names in my head.

Harry Potter is stupid because is a book meant for children, and children are fucking stupid. It's not a surprise why it has so many flaws with magic and flat characters.
The movie was an attempt to portray it in a rather serious fashion, but with the same stupid plot.
